現在、世界中には大企業や個人サイトをはじめ無数のWEBサイトが存在する。各サイトは、画像や色やデザイン、ロゴやレイアウトの差違で各々個性を出しており、そのほとんどは画面表示にフォントを必要としているわけだが、フォントそのものを個性的なオリジナルデザインで統一したプロジェクトがある。これまでも例えば自動車メーカーでの車名の書体の統一など、一般的にコーポレイトアイデンティティとして使われてきた手法だが、WEBサイト上でのフォントをオリジナルで統一したメーカーはおそらく初めてではないだろうか？

日本でもコンパクトカメラでおなじみのLOMO GRAPHIC SOCIETY INTERNATIONALでは、ロモの写真とオリジナルフォントをうまく組合わせた、美しく、クオリティの高いWEBサイトを構築しており、複数のデザイナーがサイトデザインに関わってもオリジナリティが保てるよう、全社員のパソコンをすべて同じフォントで統一している。今回のWEB JUNKIEでは、LOMOフォントをデザインしたフィデル・プジョーにインタビューした。

There’s infinite number of web sites exist now days. Every site has its own image,color,and design and it’s likely to be distinguished by the original logo or layout. We all know that using and choosing font is a must in the creation of web sites but there is only one place where it has its original font all created. Although there has been such equalization of font at places like car companies as an attempt to strengthen their corporate identity, using strictly and only their original font both for the web and printed materials has been only made possible by this unique project.

The LOMO GRAPHIC SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL, known in Japan as a company that produces Russian compact cameras, has their web sites combining lomography (photography taken by lomo) and their original fonts beautifully. Every PC there has their original fonts already installed so that everything they create will have the same quality and atmosphere. This issue of WEB JUNKIE will feature the interview of FIDEL PEUGEOT who developed those original fonts,called LOMO FONTS.

• F：1.いつからFONTを創りはじめたのですか？
• 

• L：95年のRADIOGLAIBASEL 107,6からです。それから98年までの三年間、DIE GUTE FUER ALLE(The Goodone for Everyone)と命名した筆記体スタイルのコンピュータ用フォントコレクションの開発につとめました。そして98年、新しい試みとして大好だったフォントグラファーAldo NovareseのEurostileの個人的演出バージョンNewEurostileを創りだしました。これはfastforwardという世界規模で行われているファッションエキシビションの第一回の時に使われ、現在はwallpaperマガジンのトラベルセクションに使われています。このNewEurostileフォントは私にとって今でもとても大事なきっかけを作ってくれました。99年にはSackというステンシル・スタイルのフォントを、ウィーン応用美術館で行われたJanis Kouneliusのエキシビションのために創りました。

  また98年にTIMEとwallpaper共同で作られた新しいアートマガジン「line」のためLINEというオリジナル・フォントもつくっています。LOMOとのフォントプロジェクトは99年にはじまって、主にweb screenのディスプレイを目的としたビットマップ・フォントの開発につとめ現在に至っています。

• F：2.ロモFONTは何種類作ったのですか？
• 

• L：この1年で開発したビットマップのLOMOフォントは次の5つのフォントファミリーで構成されます。

  1. LomoWall
  2. LomoWeb
  3. LomoSamples
  4. LomoCopy
  5. LomoActionSampler

  全部で126のフォントウェイト、一つ一つのキャラクターを数えるとはだいたい25000くらい。これには自分でもとてもびっくりで、これが約一年間と計算して365で割ったら…。最近では、これらのlomofontsをLomoFonts-Dynasty（ロモフォント王朝）と命名しました！

• F：3.今後の予定やFONT以外のプロジェクトは何かありますか？

• L：次に私が関わるプロジェクトはヨーロッパ圏でのモバイルデバイス（携帯電話端末）の開発で、その中で使われるフォントを含めたすべてのデザインエレメントの考案を行っています。また、フォントを使ったアニメーションにも興味を持っており、特にLomo Action Samplerというフォントはアニメーションされるヘッドライン目的としてデザインしました。

  現在、色々テストしていますが、近いうちに、面白い物をたくさん、http://www.lomo.com/の中ででも見せていければいいと考えています。

• F：4. いつからロモのWEBサイトを創っていますか？
• 

• http://www.lomo.com/のフォント以外は、例えばデザイン的なものにおいて、実は私はまったく関わっていません。ロモWEBは最初、99年の夏にデザイナー、ジュリアン・ヲングがレイアウトを立ち上げました。そしてグレン・ジャクソン・テイラーが、00年の2月に、ナミノウエダイスケがニューヨークより9月に加わり、現在この3人のデザイナーがディレクションを決定し運営しています。

  ロモWEBと私の関係のきっかけは、LOMOのヘッドアートディレクター、ベンハード・ウィンクラーとのプロジェクトでLomoWallフォントを創作している時でした。そのスタイルがWEBディスプレイにぴったりだとジュリアンからの熱烈なコールがあったので、why not？という感じでロモWEBのウェブプロジェクトのため、一気にもっとも最小なピクセルベースのロモWEBフォントを創ってしまった…というシンプルな関係です。

• F : 1. How did you start making fonts？
• L : What was your style like before LOMO fonts？ I started making Fonts with Fontographer in 1995 for RADIOGLAIBASEL 107,6 From 1995-1998 I mainly worked on my Handwriting Collection DIE GUTE FUER ALLE (THE GOODONE FOR EVERYONE), which is a large collection of handwritings for the computer. In 1998 I created a NewEurostile, a personal interpretation of the fontlegend Eurostile by Aldo Novarese. NeueEurostile was used for the first time for the international fashion exhibistion ﾈfastforwardﾇ and is at the moment used in wallpapers travelling issues. 1999 Sack, the stencil font was made for the Janis Kounellis exhibition in the MAK (Museum Applied Arts, Vienna)Peek & Cloppenburg a modern Helvetica for the German Fashion Company 1998/2000 I made the Headline font LINE for new Time Inc./Wallpaper Magazin Line 1999/2000 start with the bitmapfonts for the Lomographic Society International
• F : 2. How many fonts did you make for LOMO？
• L : The Whole LomoFont-Dynasty consists of these five LomoFont-Families: LomoWall, LomoWeb, LomoSamples, LomoCopy and LomoActionSampler. Alltogether there were at the moment 126 fontweights including about 25.000 glyphes.
• F : 3. You have done quite a lot of the font projects, what is your next big project coming up？
• L : The next project I am involved is to do the whole fonts including the design for a mobiledevice. Beside work out some animations for the LomoActionSampler, because this Fontfamiliy has been created as a animated headline font. I hope that there will soon some examples on the www.lomo.com
